Father’s Day is coming up

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Yes, I got the site and the online shop all wrapped up for Father’s Day. It took about 2.5 hours and I am glad its done. We will also send out our newsletter tonight, which highlights our specials a little bit. Overall I am very pleased with the flavor of the whiskey chocolates, today I added slightly more whiskey than last time - I am sure no-one will mind :)

We made all ganaches today and ran almost out of boards to put them on. Tomorrow we will first cut & separate the ganaches and then go on to enrobing, probably after lunch. We will enrobe for approx. 3 hours and then pack boxes until dusk….. We still have a lot to do before we leave to Italy on Monday. While we are gone, the office will be staffed by Cyndy.

That reminds me that I wanted to see if I can ‘rent’ a laptop for the time we are gone. That would make things much easier on the go …. the house we are staying in does not have phone or internet (!) ….

Finalist in the Golden Scoop Award 2007

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

Who would have thought we get that far? We were happy to learn that we are one of the three finalists in the “Best Confection” category. I think thats great - after all there were 300 participants. We will be flying to NYC in June to see if we actually win first place. There we will also check out a couple of chocolate bars and shops, like Michel Cluizels chocolate shop. He is one of my idols in good chocolate making and their shop in Paris, France is phenomenal. Anyway, we’ll have a good time, we always do in the big apple.

Today we made ganaches again, we thought we would have made it another week, but nope, we are completely out of rhubarb caramel and port - and there were only 20 or so raspberry left :)

Tomorrow we will enrobe cinnamon milk chocolate pralines and get the other ganaches ready for enrobing on Tuesday …. that reminds me that i have to order some more candied rose petals ….

Too late!

… to write a lot. We were all over the area today. First we visited our friends at Pearmund Cellars and had a nice glass of Armitage Reserve (one of my favorites) and spoke to Chris about some of our new (and still top secret) products. Then we made it all the way over to Maryland to setup a tasting at a Bay Wine & Spirits shop in North Beach Maryland at the Chesapeake Bay. You will find it soon on the locations page. They will be carrying our boxed chocolates. The tasting went very well - everyone was very welcoming and liked our products.

Tomorrow we’ll have some friends over to go visit the wineries again and just have a good time. There are not enough hours in the day - I am off for now ;)

Calculate your age by chocolate

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

A fun equation I discovered through my iGoogle homepage. You can determine your age by checking how much chocolate you eat in a week. Here is how it works:

  1. Determine how many times a week you eat or want chocolate. It must be a number between 1 and 10, including 1 or 10.
    • Let’s say you eat chocolate 8 times a week (we won’t tell).
  2. Multiply that number by 2.
    • 8 x 2 = 16
  3. Add 5 to the previous result.
    • 16 + 5 = 21
  4. Multiply that by 50.
    • 21 x 50 = 1050
  5. Add 1757 if you’ve had a birthday this year. If you haven’t had a birthday this year, add 1756.
    • Let’s say your birthday hasn’t passed yet.
    • 1050 + 1756 = 2806
  6. Subtract your birth year.
    • Assuming you were born in 1975…
    • 2806 - 1975 = 831
  7. You’ll end up with a 3 digit number, the first digit (in the hundreds place) is how many times a week you eat or want chocolate (the number you specified in the first step). The next two numbers are your age!

Everyone fuzzes about writing blogs. Since I know the importance from a technical standpoint (blogging is good for SEO), I decided to start my own blog. Of course I want to make it entertaining to read though and it might even give me some opportunity to reflect on given happenings and developments. So, sit back and relax and enjoy some news or thoughts I have about us, chocolate and the world in general.
