Chocolaterie Wanders
The Washington area has become home in recent years to several expert chocolate makers, but Prince Williams's entry, Chocolaterie Wanders, has a European pedigree that is hard to beat.
Wilhelm Wanders comes from a line of German chocolate makers that stretches back to 1725 -- his family still operates a pastry shop in Kleve, Germany. He met his wife, Melanie, while working with master chocolate maker Larry Burdick in New Hampshire, and the couple then went back to Germany and perfected their craft.
The chocolates turned out by the Wanders in the Manassas production kitchen are small, most about a half-inch square. But these are mighty morsels: One bite, and the chocolate flavor fills your mouth. These are primarily dark chocolates of exquisite taste.
There are several mainstay flavors -- including an incredible Earl Grey tea that is accented with lavender and so intense that a single small candy is satisfying -- with specialty flavors that rotate seasonally.
Chocolaterie Wanders chocolates are for sale online at http://www.chocolateriewanders.com and at several Prince William locations, including the Cork and Fork (7333 Atlas Walk Way, Gainesville, 703-753-5554); Tranquility Day Spa & Salon (15125 Washington St., Suite 304, Haymarket, 571-248-4150); Winery at La Grange (4970 Antioch Rd., Haymarket, 703-753-9360); and the Opera House Gourmet (9126 Center St., Manassas, 703-330-9636). Individual selections are about $1.25; gift boxes range from $3.25 for two pieces to $55.95 for a pound.
